In many cases, the most motivated and reliable employees are overlooked due to their disabilities. However, many employers have found that hiring people with disabilities is both the right thing to do and a smart business decision.

Our Direct Support Professionals (DSP) work one-on-one with you through every phase of the employment process. Our employment services for adults with disabilities can help you with the following:

Our Employment Services Process:
- Community-Based Work Assessments
First Point performs community-based work assessments to see if you are ready and able to return to (or start) working competitively in the community. Our experts observe, monitor, and coach you as you perform your essential work duties and ensure you follow the policies and procedures of your employer.
- Choosing an Industry
Our goal is to match your interests with the company to ensure you are happy with your job. We realize each person’s needs are different, so we customize our services for each client. We can help you find jobs in retail, food service, maintenance, customer service, production, clerical settings, and more.
- Starting the Job
Once we’ve matched you with an employer, you’ll participate in a job as if you were an employee. You will work part-time or full-time and will be supervised by your job coach throughout your shift. This experience allows you to see exactly what’s involved in the job. Once the job coach has completed the work assessment, we’ll make recommendations for the next steps in your search for employment.
- How Does It Work for Employers?
We work with your schedule and how often your company would like to participate. Everything is done at your terms and pace. Each employer has different jobs that need to be completed, and we cater to those needs.
All participants are expected to obey the policies and procedures of the company, and you are under no obligation to hire anyone. Ultimately, the community-based work assessment is designed to see if the individual likes the job and can work competitively.
Our specially-trained DSPs work closely with employers and provide free on-the-job training for new employees if necessary. We also offer advice on job accommodations and follow-up reviews to make sure the individual is performing well.
- Internships
We also offer internships to interested employers. Our clients will work for your company at no cost to you for one to three days a week. One of our professional job coaches will work with the participant on the job to teach them and ensure they’re meeting the job requirements. The coach will also make sure the individual follows the policies and procedures of your company.
Employment will only be offered if the intern meets the company’s requirements. You are under no obligation to hire the individual if the internship does
not work out.
Social Skills Training
The consequences of learning disabilities are rarely confined to school or work. Many areas of life are affected, including the role of the person with learning disabilities in their family, relationships with friends, non-academic functioning such as sports or dancing, self-esteem, and self-confidence to handle daily situations.
Individuals who have learning disabilities may be less observant in their social environment, may misinterpret the social behavior of others at times, and may not learn as easily from experiences or social “cues” as their friends. Some may exhibit an immaturity and social ineptness due to their learning disability. While seeking acceptance, their eagerness may cause them to try too hard in inappropriate ways.
We provide social skills training to help individuals with learning disabilities in the following areas:
- Maintain/Develop Relationships
- Understanding Emotions
- Understanding Social Cues
- Understanding Fairness & Honesty
- Obeying Society Laws
- Behavior Management

Preparing for life after high school can be daunting, especially for high school students with disabilities. Finding employment, living independently, and adjusting to new people and expectations can be tough, but they are key to a happy and successful future. We provide an extensive transition curriculum for students with disabilities to help them flourish and achieve their dreams.
Preparing for Success
The First Point Transition Services program helps you live more independently and have greater confidence in your abilities. We prepare you for the future by giving you the knowledge you need to find competitive employment and become a contributing member of your community. This creates a supportive, confidential environment for you to discuss personal challenges and make social connections. Our Direct Support Professionals (DSP) coordinate with adult education programs to provide support for each student’s plans and personal goals. The First Point Transition Services program is intended for recently graduated students that focus on the following skill areas:

Recreation
Adult Enrichment provides participants the opportunity to socialize, learn, and engage in hobbies and interests. Our participants gain valuable community-building skills and explore social clubs and events. Our program and community activities are focused on each individual’s interests and goals. Above everything else, we are a community of friends who have fun together, support one another, and share in each other’s challenges and triumphs.
